University’s research strength stands out in global research quality evaluation

Continues strong performance in domestic and international university rankings, proving global competitiveness

 Yeungnam University (YU, President CHOI Oe-chool) has once again demonstrated its research excellence, ranking among the Top 5 universities in Korea for the second consecutive year in the 2025 Leiden Ranking, a global university evaluation focused on research quality. 


 In the latest ranking announced by Leiden University in the Netherlands, YU placed 5th in Korea based on the proportion of the top 10% most-cited SCI papers (PP Top 10%, Full counting, No minimum) published between 2020 and 2023.The Leiden Ranking evaluates universities solely on the citation impact of international academic publications, excluding qualitative factors such as reputation or publication volume.This year’s assessment included 1,594 universities worldwide that published at least 800 international papers over the past four years, with 52 Korean universities listed.


By field, YU ranked 2nd nationwide in Mathematics & Computer Science, maintaining its top-tier position for more than a decade. In Life & Earth Sciences, YU rose significantly in the global ranking from 365th last year to 221st worldwide and 2nd in Korea. Additionally, YU improved in Physical Sciences & Engineering, jumping from 11th to 7th place nationwide, further confirming the university’s strong research capability across diverse academic fields.


President CHOI Oe-chool stated, “These outstanding results in the Leiden Ranking and other national and global university evaluations demonstrate that YU’s research innovation capacity is internationally recognized. We will continue to nurture talented individuals who contribute to national development and shared prosperity, based on YU’s strong research and education system.”


 Meanwhile, YU has recently achieved notable performance in various university assessments across education and innovation sectors. Based on its global leadership in Saemaul Studies, YU ranked 3rd nationwide in Leadership and Social Responsibility in the 2024 World University Rankings for Innovation (WURI). In the 2025 INUE–Hankyung University Evaluation, YU ranked 1st among regional private universities and 3rd nationwide in SCI papers per faculty member, proving the high quality of its research output.Furthermore, in the 2026 THE World University Rankings released by Times Higher Education (THE), YU ranked 1st among regional comprehensive universities (tied with Kyungpook National University, Pusan National University, and University of Ulsan) and 15th nationwide, up four places from the previous year, reaffirming its rising reputation.
